FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

This all sounds good – what’s it going to cost me?

It’s a fair-enough question. The answer is that typically there is a Basic Studio Fee (BSF) and then after that it depends on the length of the work, where it will be used and for how long. So, a short video-explainer for internal corporate use will cost less than a national TV advert. Usually clients opt to ‘buyout’ the rights for a particular medium (e.g. local radio) for a particular period of time (e.g. 12 months). This avoids the need to monitor and pay royalties during that time. Give Dex a call or send an email with your requirements for a tailored estimate.

Can I try before I buy?

Absolutely! If you are interested but need further convincing – send Dex some of your copy and a brief explanation of where it will be used and the style you’d like, for a free-of-charge sample audition reel to help you decide for sure!
Turnaround is normally less than 24 hours, but please say if you are in a hurry and Dex will get his skates on!

We know what we’re doing and have a UK studio we would like Dex to travel to, is that possible?

More than possible! Dex is based in the South East of England, close to major road and rail networks – so travel, for the right project, is not an issue.

I don’t have a studio or a director/sound engineer – is that a problem?

Not a problem at all. Plenty of clients rely on the voiceover artist to self-direct and self-record. Dex has a professionally equipped studio and provides a start-to-end service as required, including self-direction, recording, editing, mixing, and delivery of the final audio file ready for you to use.

I don’t have a studio, but I have a director, or I want to be involved in the direction/production process – can you still help me?

Yes! Some clients like to be hands-on with the project and Dex can set up a telephone-link to enable live direction, including Zoom, Skype, or Google Meet. Alternatively, if you have a director whom you wish to direct a remote session – Dex can offer Source Connect or ipDTL (including virtual ISDN) connections for high-quality real-time audio recording and directorial feedback.

What if I pay for 12 months usage but I end up wanting to use the recording for another year?

Again, not a problem, plenty of clients return to extend the use of the recording, subject to an additional fee, just get in touch a few weeks beforehand.

What if I pay for a recording for one type of use, but then decide to use it elsewhere as well?

So, this does happen. For example, a client may pay for the 24 month use of a recording purely for internal corporate use (induction and on-boarding for example), then decide that they would like to use some, or all, of that recording on their website. Simply get in touch with Dex for a friendly quote for the additional use.

What if I want to make changes to the recording?

This is not normally a problem – but it does depend on timing. The industry standard is two or three free-of-charge alterations – but these need to be done during the editing stages – obviously changes several months after the recording will incur additional time and therefore an additional fee.
